How Long Does Professional Holiday Lighting Installation Actually Take?
Reading time: 4 minutesYou want your home to look festive for the holidays, but you probably don't want to spend your entire day waiting for the lights to go up.
So, how long does professional holiday lighting installation actually take?
For most homes, it's a few hours, not a full day. And yes, that's still faster than untangling last year's lights. The exact time depends on your home's size, how much of the property you're decorating, and how complex the installation is.

Installation Time by Home Size
Average Bungalow: 2 to 3 Hours
A standard bungalow with a straightforward roofline and clear access all the way around is our most predictable install. Most are done in a morning or afternoon, so the rest of your day carries on as planned.
If ladders can’t easily reach every side, or trees are part of the plan, it can take a bit longer.
Average Two-Story: 3 to 4 Hours
A two-story home has more roofline and more height than a bungalow, and both add time. Each section takes longer to reach and secure, and there’s a lot more strand to hang than on a bungalow of the same width.
Oversized Two-Story: 4 to 6 Hours or More
A bigger footprint, more roofline, and trickier angles all stretch the install window. Corner lots with three or four exposed sides take longer than a standard front-and-garage setup. Homes with turrets, mixed roofline heights, or lots of architectural detail need extra time at every transition to fit and secure the lights properly.
What Adds Time to Any Installation
No matter your home’s size, these things can stretch the timeline:
- Roofline complexity. Gables, dormers, turrets, and irregular rooflines take more time to fit and secure than a straight run. Every change in direction adds a few more minutes.
- Tree lighting. Wrapping mature trees is one of the most common add-ons, and the size and number of trees affect how long the install takes.
- Ladder access. Landscaping, fencing, window wells, or hard-to-reach corners slow things down. A clear path around your home is one of the simplest ways to keep the install on the faster end of the estimate.
- Weather on installation day. Wind, freezing drizzle, or fresh snow on the roofline can slow the crew down or require rescheduling. Prairie weather in October and November loves to keep us guessing, so keep that in mind when you book.
- Colour changes from last year. Want a fresh look? We can switch your colours for a small fee, but we re-stage the strands first, which adds a little time compared to repeating last year’s display.
- Customer-supplied lights. Green Drop can install your own lights as long as they’re in good working condition (we can’t install permanent lights or string lights with glass bulbs). Fitting lights we haven’t used before takes a little longer than installing our own commercial-grade kit.
What Actually Happens on Installation Day

- When the Green Drop crew arrives, they’ll do a quick walk of the property, either with you or using measurements from your estimate to confirm the plan before anything goes up.
- We custom-fit the lights and stage them on the ground before installation starts, which is a big part of what separates a pro job from a DIY one.
- From there, the crew works from one end of the roofline to the other, section by section, until the full display is up.
- Before leaving, we set the timer and take photos to confirm the job is done.
What Do You Need to Do?
Not much. Here’s the full list:
- Have a working power source accessible at the property
- Be reachable by phone during the install in case the crew has questions
- If you’re adding tree lighting, a brief walk of the property at booking helps the team plan the job properly and avoids surprises on install day
You don’t need to be home for the duration. If you want to be there for the walkthrough at the start, that takes ten minutes. After that, the crew has it covered, so go ahead and make yourself a hot chocolate.
Once the lights are up, this holiday lighting safety checklist covers what to check around the roofline and power access mid-season.
