Green Drop’s Rainwater Initiative in Calgary

Reading time: 2 - minutes

As drought conditions have intensified over the past several years across Alberta, we at Green Drop knew we had to take bold, sustainable action to protect water resources without compromising the service we deliver to our amazing customers and homeowners across the region.

That’s why we launched a custom-engineered rainwater collection system at our Calgary branch: a solution designed to reduce strain on municipal water supplies and increase operational efficiency.

Launched in June 2025, the new system captures rainfall from the roof of our equipment barn, an expansive 10,000-square-foot structure that houses work trucks overnight. Using strategically placed downspouts, the rainwater is directed into a repurposed 10,000-gallon tank stationed onsite.

According to Green Drop Calgary’s Business Unit Leader, Dimitri Bouranzanis, the system can collect 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of rainwater from just one inch of rainfall.

“We’ve already collected about 3,000 gallons from recent rain. And that’s with just 25% of the roof currently hooked up. We’re aiming to scale up to 100% in the coming weeks.”

This water plays a crucial role in our daily operations, particularly when mixing fertilizer and weed control solutions. And with Calgary often enforcing watering restrictions during hot, dry months, having a sustainable water source helps us stay consistent and compliant while caring for our clients’ lawns.

“This isn’t just about saving money. It’s about reducing our impact, staying adaptable, and showing that sustainable solutions can work in the real world at scale.”

Innovation Rooted in Local History

The initiative means a lot to us, given Green Drop’s deep roots in Calgary. Founded in 1979, we’ve grown to serve homeowners across Western Canada, but Calgary will always be our home turf. This rainwater collection project reflects that long-standing connection, combining innovation with stewardship.

“Calgary is where it all started for us. We care about this city, and we want to be part of the solution.”

Dimitri Bouranzanis, Business Unit Leader, Calgary

As Western Canada continues to experience climate-related stress, including frequent drought warnings, water-conscious practices are quickly becoming essential. By collecting and reusing rainwater, we want to do our part in easing the burden on the municipal system.

This is our pilot project, but it’s just the beginning.

Once we fine-tune the process here in Calgary, there’s no reason we can’t replicate it in Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, and beyond.
